About the evening
Andrew McMillan is one of Britain’s most brilliant young poets and also one of a growing number of celebrated British LGBT poets. His collection, Physical, has been called “electrifyingly fresh and lyrical” (Davie Morley) and “a glorious, vivid exploration of the body” (Michael Symmons Roberts) and was the first collection of poetry to ever win the Guardian First Book Award in 2015. It also won the Fenton Aldeburgh First Collection Prize. The same collection was shortlisted for the Costa Award, Forward Prize for Best First Collection, and was Poetry Book Society Recommendation. McMillan’s collection comes after a series of successful pamphlets and individual poem publications in the London Review of Books, The Financial Times, The Guardian and Modern Poetry in Translation.

“This is poetry which seems effortlessly to make the connection between the immediacy of personal concerns and enduring social issues. Anxieties over masculinity and manhood repeatedly arise out of anecdotal poems[…] And yet, where uncertainty and embarrassment might prevail, we find alongside it a deep and unabashed joy in the body and in the sharing of it.”
